Educators engaged in conversation at the Summer conference for mathematics educators

Conference overview

Every August, the CEMC hosts a three-day Summer Conference for Computer Studies and Mathematics Educators on campus at the University of Waterloo. The conference offers educators the opportunity to choose between CS and Math sessions directed toward different grade levels and topics.

Computer Studies

Sessions are designed to provide secondary school computer studies educators with resources to implement computer science and computer technology curricula in their classrooms.

Most sessions are hands-on or in the lab. Educators will have a chance to try out software, hardware, and other types of resources, with knowledgeable presenters who have used them in their own classes.

Interested elementary school educators are welcome to register.

Mathematics

Sessions are designed for educators teaching Grades 7 to 12 mathematics. Sessions with a Grade 7/8 focus and sessions with a Grade 9-12 focus will be run simultaneously during each time slot. Interested elementary school educators of Grades K-6 are welcome to register.

Presentations are interactive and allow for discussion, debate, and networking. These active learning sessions might focus on pedagogy, enrichment, effective technology implementation, problem solving, curriculum connections, and so much more.

As our list of presenters grows, so does our anticipation of a terrific 2025 conference. For example, in a session led by Marion Small, an Ottawa-based math educator and researcher, educators will refine their questioning practice to include questions that lead to conversations, provide the opportunity for multiple solutions and have the depth needed to allow for meaningful justification of solutions.
